Minister of Music

MINISTRY DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE

The Music Minister will be a strong leader possessing a passion for traditional and contemporary worship, a vision for musical excellence, the ability to lead instrumentalists and vocalists, basic skills for playing an instrument and the ability to lead congregational singing. Through our worship, God will be praised and glorified, people will relate to each other, and the un-churched and non-believers will hear the proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, this job description is subject to change as the needs of Cross Roads Baptist Church change. The Senior Pastor, along with the counsel of the Deacons, will notify the Minister of Music when such changes are needed.

Responsible To

Responsible to the Senior Pastor and Deacon Ministry – The Minister of Music will consult with the Senior Pastor on all policies, plans, procedures, and problems, before implementing ministry strategies.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Faithfully support the overall ministry programming, services, and events of the church.

  • Schedule all activities with the Church Secretary before implementing.

  • Work in concert with the pastor to develop and coordinate music for the worship services that fit the theme of the service.

  • Recruit, lead, and train the Adult Choir or other ensemble.

  • Develop key music ministries within the congregation and supervise the organization and direction of such individuals/groups:

    • Organist/Keyboard

    • Pianist

    • Vocal/Instrumental Soloists

    • Vocal/Instrumental Ensembles

  • Direct, involve and coordinate the video, sound, and light technicians.

  • Select music for and lead congregational singing.

  • Schedule guest musicians.

  • Provide input into all events and services which require music.

  • Plan special programs for holiday services.

  • Assist with maintenance of the music library and musical instruments.

  • Administer the Music Ministry by encouraging teamwork and mutual support.

  • Operate within the department budget.

  • Connect with other key ministries that serve at worship services, both internal and external ministries.

  • Arrange for a suitable substitute in the event of absence.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Since a staff member’s confidence and strength in ministry stem from a personal relationship with Christ, staff employees must be sure of their salvation. (II Peter 1:3-10).

  • A growing Christian faith and character. (II Peter 3:18).

  • A faithful attendee of scheduled services of Cross Roads Baptist Church. (Hebrews 10:25).

  • A lifestyle congruent with the biblical requirements for leaders.                                                   (1 Tim. 3:1-13; 2 Tim. 2; Titus 1:5-9)

  • Must be faithful in stewardship to the church (i.e., tithe and offerings)

  • Must have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ and be striving to grow in that relationship

  • The ability to read and play music

  • The ability to direct congregational singing

  • The ability to organize and lead choirs, ensembles, and instrumentalists

  • A heart for personal and corporate worship of God

  • A passion to involve and equip people for ministry

  • A willingness to work with a team concept

  • A yearning to reach the lost

  • An understanding of the theology of worship

  • Become a member of the Church once called
